she sunk into the golden coast
all saccharine and lachrymose
where a stomach punch of memories reside
she was lifted up by an easy touch
anything that hurt had turned to rust
in the muted browns of a broken town
hollowed out by time
but there's a recess that hides in the back of her mind
a prison turned into a shrine

everyone’s trying to make their name
build their brand, find some fame
project that perfect, cold, predictable life
victories never meant that much
any good she’s done was just beginner's luck

but there's a distant mirage with a two-car garage
and a christmas tree dressed to the nines
she's drinking alone watching the snow
telling herself that someday she’ll be fine
when all the white noise fades away
i’ll start again on new year's day
losing track of my steps and finding my way
make it up as I go along from day to day
her hometown's been commercialized
commoditized and gentrified
edges smoothed, easy on the eyes, but dying inside
she don't mind all that much
all her life's been moving stuff
from coast to coast and dust to dust
she was born astray
but there's a price that you pay to make your escape
in a black hole of whiskey and wine
she laid there alone trapped in the glow
telling herself that someday she’ll be fine
so when all the white noise fades away
